Chapter Nine
Hoyt cursed and yawned as he turned right on St. Charles Street for the second time. It was late, after eight o’clock at night. As soon as he’d gotten on the interstate to race to Mack Griffin’s house, he’d realized his mistake. Within five minutes it was backed up with rush-hour traffic. Then a tractor-trailer rig carrying PVC pipe turned over and the pipe rolled everywhere, blocking all lanes. He was stuck, practically not moving at all, for over two hours.
He just hoped Griffin was behind him and experiencing the same frustrating delay. The bad news, even if he was behind him, was that he could call Hannah and warn her—tell her to run and hide.
When he’d finally made it to Griffin’s address, he’d driven by slowly, trying to see if he could tell whether Griffin was there and more important, whether Hannah was there.
If she was here, he’d manage one way or another to get in and grab her, hopefully before Griffin got home.
He wasn’t looking forward to another fistfight. Even with his brass knuckles, the younger, fitter man had almost beaten him.

AS HOYT PASSED Griffin’s house, he noticed the pizza shop directly across St. Charles. At the last second he whipped across the median and into its parking lot. Stepping inside, he went up to the counter, where two waitresses in T-shirts with the pizza shop’s logo and towels over their shoulders were talking.
“And then Tom kicked him out,” the first waitress said. “I’m telling you, Kelly, he looked awful. His face was all bloody.”
“I’m Detective Norris,” Hoyt interrupted with a friendly smile. “Someone called about a disturbance?”
“Yeah!” the first waitress said. “My boss must have called. A man with blood all over him came in here looking for someone. He looked like a-an ax murderer.”
The other waitress laughed nervously.
“What about the woman?” Hoyt said casually, patting his shirt pocket as if looking for a pen and pad.
“The woman? Oh, she came in right about the time my boss came out. She was blond with a long braid in back. She looked scared.”
“Where did they go when Tom threw them out?”
“They got in his car and drove off.”
Hoyt took a step forward. “What kind of car?”
“White. A BMW, maybe?” the young woman said. “You probably want to talk to Tom.”
“That’s okay,” Hoyt said, pulling out his cell phone as if he was about to call for backup. “I know the car. Thanks. You’ve been real helpful.” Then he ran out of the shop and jumped into his car, slamming his palm against the steering wheel.
How had Griffin beaten him here? He must have taken a shortcut on some backstreets.
His best guess was that Griffin was probably either on the interstate by now, headed east, away from any danger to Hannah, or that he’d headed toward the bayou country. He couldn’t imagine that the lawyer was helping her merely out of the goodness of his heart or his sense of justice. Griffin was probably in love with her, or at least in lust, and hoping to keep her and himself out of danger.
